Nugget for the Day!
First task?
Read this primer on why Omega 3 fatty acids are SO IMPORTANT!
Now that you're clear on our diets being high on the Omega 6 side (think seeds, most nuts, grains, vegetable oils, which cause inflammation in our bodies), we need to ponder how to get more Omega 3's in our diets (think fish, fish, fish...grass-fed beef, and enriched eggs, which are anti-inflammatory).
The typical American diet has a 15:1 up to a 30:1 ratio of Omega 6 fatty acids to Omega 3 fatty acids.
A 3:1, 2:1, or even 1:1 ratio is recommended.
I don't know about you, but I don't consume fish regularly, and I also worry about the mercury and concentrations of other environmental toxins in fresh fish (wild caught is your best bet if you eat fish on a regular basis). With fish oil, you avoid the toxins in highly purified fish oils.
As far as recommended daily intake, some suggest 1-3 grams, others a minimum of 4 grams. *See the fish oil calculator below to help you determine what might work best for you.
The Mottls have been taking daily fish oil supplements for over a year, and it truly is liquid gold as they say! :) We each take 4 grams a day and have felt a difference from the start. Not only does it benefit brain and nervous system functioning but it also helps with inflammation throughout the body. Think better recovery from your CrossFit workouts as well!
Who doesn't love that?!!
How to determine your dosage? Use Whole 9's fish oil calculator:
Now, let's talk brands.
We've taken Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 3's from the start.
Super concentrated and high quality.
HERE IS THE DEAL! YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE BOTTLE AND ADD UP THE EPA + DHA GRAMS/MILLIGRAMS.
Many of the fish oils have fillers. The front MAY SAY it's a 1,000 mg pill of fish oil, but in reality when you flip to the back side, you're only getting 200-500 mg of the good stuff (EPA + DHA) in each pill.
Tricky, isn't it?
Here's what we currently take:
As you see from the label, in 2 PILLS, we get 1100 mg or 1.1 grams of EPA + DHA.
We take 4 grams each a day, which means we take 8 pills each a day (each of us).
Manageable.
No funny taste. No issues whatsoever.
We've been pleased with it. We recommend it to everyone. It's all good!
Then I go to the Whole 9 Seminar, and they have us taste-test this:
It's a SUPER Concentrated fish oil liquid that comes in 5 flavors: chocolate, vanilla, tangerine, lemon, and mint.
Don't think dessert, here, people. :)
It's still fish oil.
But, the chocolate, vanilla, and lemon were very do-able (the mint and tangerine- kind of blah, in my opinion), and the BEST PART IS:
In 2 teaspoons, you get from 3,150 mg - 3600 mg (or 3.1 to 3.6 grams) of fish oil. (The list a range on the bottle as different fish have different levels of the good stuff).
So in 2 teaspoons of this liquid, I would almost get the same EPA + DHA that I currently get in 8 pills. In addition, the liquid is more readily absorbed.
On top of that, the StrongerFasterHealthier liquid is $38.00 for 30 servings.
The Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega is $27.95 for 60 pills. For me, this is 7.5 servings.
Soooo, my brain is telling me to go with the high quality liquid and save ourselves some cash.
For basically the same EPA/DHA, I pay $3.72 for the Nordic pill serving versus $1.27 for the SFH.
I will be placing an order for the Mottl fam on Monday!
If anyone would like to hop in on the order and join us, please email me what flavor you'd like. I have a coupon to boot, so let me know by Sunday if you'd like a bottle of magic. :)
Oh, yeah.
